Part 3 of my Sleepy Sam pictures. Partly influenced by a Jerry Seinfeld bit (which I realized after I did the drawing), but man, I hate when you have everything ready for cereal, and you just realize you don't have milk. The carton might feel like it's got enough in it, but it's always so deceiving. You get your bowl ready, the spoon's out, you're ready to go, and OH! Sorry, no breakfast today.

Lots of people are asking about the three Sleepy Sam pictures, so I'll just explain the process a little, on the rendering. The drawings were put on their own layer in Photoshop (multiply) and I cleaned them up to where I wanted them. I didn't care much about having these drawings a little dirtier than usual because I was prety happy with the looser linework. I put one layer on the bottom as a fill, and at the beginning it was a dark green (this way, should I miss a spot or have color transparent, there wouldn't be white underneath).

Then I went blocking in areas on the piece (pretty much used a chalk brush with various flows and opacities to change up texture when I wanted). I actually wound up using a lot of layer masks to help me block in areas. For example, in the face, I wanted to be able to be pretty loose without worrying about coloring outside the lines. I made a layer mask on that layer and masked off where I wanted Photoshop to hide parts of the layer, which let me paint all over the face without worry that I'd go outside the line.

Then it was basically a process of going off my color study and filling things in, changing things as needed, and deciding where I wanted texture to show through or be tighter. More layer masks were used, and basically every local value has its own layer (the face has a layer to itself, the hair a layer to itself, the blue background on the left a background to itself, and the yellow a layer to itself, etc).

The upper left corner gave me a few problems because I had to redraw it and scan it in a couple times.

As I said, the line art was put on its own layer. At first it was on a multiply layer. At some point I had felt like the lines were looking too gray and too harsh, so I duplicated the line layer (apple+j or ctrl+j). Now the lines looked really dark, so I knocked down the opacity of both layers. I wanted some of the color to show through a little, so I set one of the layers to linear burn. The thing with linear burn though is that it's really harsh. You just have to adjust the opacities of both layers until you're satisfied with the results.

Overall I was pretty happy with it. Hope that clears some things up.

Isn't that how it always goes?! This is when my ma would tell me to put water in it. Sleepy Sam Sighs over Cereal is a great "D'oh!" moment painted in choppy colors over rough pencils; a fabulous look that works for the rubbin'-out-the-eye-crusties time of day. LOL - Oh I love this style! I do hate it when we are out of milk but then again I don't care about food so much anymore as to be bothered by that. Sleepy Sam is adorable!
